“Great evening of flyfishing”
5 of 5 starsReviewed 3 days ago NEW
As part of my Alaska vacation, I hoped to flyfish for grayling. I booked with a local guide service months prior only to get a call two days before from that guide cancelling because his fishing was poor. I appreciated his honesty (he refunded all my money), but I was still left without a grayling... a web search for Denali grayling brought me to these folks. The guide Mike at Fish Denali concurred that although the stream fishing was poor, there were lakes on their property with grayling and rainbow trout, I needed a trip, so I booked an evening fly fishing trip.

Mike picked me up at my hotel (Denali Bluffs) and we talked hunting and fishing the 15- 20 minute ride to the property. Mike allowed if I wanted to still fish the streams we could as they were just behind the lakes, but suggested we make a few casts at one of the lakes first. My first cast a grayling slammed the fly. My first grayling ever was a beautiful 12 incher.

I surely missed and lost twice as many as I landed, but fishing dry flies on a 3 wt fly rod they provided (all tackle and flies were included) I landed 12 grayling- the biggest a 17" beauty.

This was an evening trip so as light subsided, we went to a larger rod and streamer and sight fished for rainbows in another lake. I didn't get every fish we saw as the trout were cruising the shoreline, but I did land a ten rainbows on the streamer. Smallest fish was perhaps 10 inches, but I got 4 fish over 20 inches, including 3 over 24". My biggest was 26.5"!!! I lost two other fish over 20"...

It was pretty dark now and we could no longer see the fish. I figured we were done, but Mike asked if I wanted to fish a bit longer with what he called a large "dry fly"... Mike tied on a fairly large deer hair bass bug that resembled a rodent. I honestly felt a little silly casting this huge fly out and blindly swimming it along the shoreline, but I did as he asked... I either missed the first fish or he might not have been big enough to get that big fly in his mouth, but the next fish hit with a big splash, and my hookup was solid. Several minutes later, my last fish of the trip, a gorgeous 25" rainbow was in the net.

Not a wild adventure, or even hard fishing, but not too easy either.A beginner could probably at least catch the grayling, Fly fishing with some really big fish available.I had fun,got my first ever grayling, and honestly, the biggest trout I have ever caught an a "dry fly". I'd certainly recommend these folks!!!
